Dialogue between two friends about 21 February
Salman: How ar you?
Saif : I am fine and you?
Salman: Saif, do you know why February 21 is so significant in Bangladesh?
Saif: Yeah, it’s International Mother Language Day, right? It commemorates the Bengali Language Movement.
Salman: Exactly! It all started in 1952 when students protested for the recognition of Bengali as one of the state languages of then-East Pakistan.
Saif: Right! The movement was really powerful. Many students lost their lives, but it ultimately led to the recognition of Bengali.
Salman: It’s such a crucial part of Bangladesh’s identity. The day is honored not just in Bangladesh but globally now.
Saif: Yeah, UNESCO even declared it International Mother Language Day in 1999. It’s amazing how a local movement gained such international significance.
Salman: For sure! It highlights the importance of preserving languages and cultures. How do you think we can celebrate it more?
Saif: I think promoting awareness in schools and communities could help. Maybe organizing cultural events or discussions about language and identity.
Salman: Great idea! We should also encourage people to share their stories about language and culture. It’s a way to connect and appreciate our heritage.
Saif: Absolutely! It’s all about fostering respect and love for our languages. After all, language is such a big part of who we are.
Salman: Definitely! Let's make sure we spread the word this year.
Saif : No more today. See you.
Salman : See you. Thank you.
